Coach Accreditation Pathway

Once registered as a coach you are a member of Basketball Queensland coach community through the BQ Coaches App.The coaches app provides you a number of resources including:

          •  Have quick access to drills, videos and documents

          •  Keep track of your Accreditation and download coaching certificates

          •  Book into upcoming courses and clinics through the Calendar section

As a registered coach you can access both:

Formal education: Accreditation Pathway

Informal learning opportunities include:

          •  Coaches weekend,

          •  New Year’s clinic,

          •  Coaching Clinics with guest coaches from across the country.

          •  Aspire Coach program (link or button to HP Coaching page)

Registration and Accreditation

To coach in Basketball Queensland competitions such SQJBC, CQJBC, NQJBC, State Championships, QSL & NBL1  North you must be both registered and accredited at minimum of community coach level.

Registration and accreditation are the first step to help guide & develop your own growth as a coach and to better assist your players coaching experience.


Coach Accreditation Standards in Queensland

To coach a BQ junior representative Under 16 or Under 18, QSL or NBL1 North team, you need to have Association Coach Accreditation. This helps assure our youth players, parents and adult players of our coach standards.

Coach accreditation levels

There are five recognised coaching accreditations within Australia:

Level of Coaching: Aussie Hoops and Club
Accreditation: Community
Process: Click here
Prerequisites: No experience required

This is the first step in your coaching pathway and is designed to help prepare coaches across all sports for what to expect in their role. This is a minimum requirement within Basketball Queensland to coach at any level. 

Level of Coaching: Club, Junior Representive, School Basketball
Accreditation Process: Full day course (5 hours) and Online Course (45 mins)
Prerequisites: Community Coach Certificate

This is the first basketball specific accreditation in your coaching journey and touches on how to develop individual skills as well as basic team concepts. This is a minimum requirement to be a head coach at junior club/rep level. Find courses here

Level of Coaching: Queensland State League (QSL), State Teams, NBL1 North
Accreditation Process: Weekend course and an assessment
Prerequisites: Club Coach Accreditation (held for a minimum 12 months)

This is a more in-depth accreditation aimed at experienced coaches and includes presentations on advanced tactics as well as improving some of the on-court competencies of a coach. This is a minimum requirement to be a head coach at senior rep level, NBL1 North and QLD state teams. 

Level of Coaching: National Programs and Professional Leagues
Accreditation Process: 5 day Performance Coach Course
Prerequisites: Six years Association Coach accreditation experience

This is a National level accreditation for coaches involved with high level representative teams and development squads; or for Queensland Coaches who derive a part or casual income through player development opportunities, paid team coaching or school based coach employment. 

Level of Coaching: National Teams and Programs
Accreditation Process: Elite Practical Training and Management Course
Prerequisites: National Coaching Role or other BA Performance Pathways

The Master Coach accreditation program is driven, coordinated and managed by Basketball Australia and coach candidates require endorsement from a State/Territory basketball association or national league club to participate in the program. 

BQ currently facilitate the Community, Club & Association accreditations and are working with BA to reinstate further accreditation pathways.

Re-accreditation Process

If you are a registered coach with BQ your accreditation levels will be managed and renewed automatically according to BQ & Basketball Australia Coach accreditation policy.

If registered as a Club Accredited Coach and you have obtained your accreditation within BQ in the past five years you are eligible for the Club Renewal Course which can be found on the coaches app.

If registered as an Association Accredited Coach and you have obtained your accreditation within BQ in the past 5 years and can provide a coaching history and also obtain association endorsement you will be reaccredited for a further 3 years.

If you are registered and were accredited more than five years ago then subject to Association endorsement and clear evidence of your accreditation then you will be endorsed for a further three years and then subject to automatic renewal.
