Wheelchair Basketball

One of the fastest growing sports for people with a disability

Wheelchair basketball is one of the fastest growing sports for people with a disability, and continues to gather popularity among people of all abilities as both a spectator sport and recreation activity. People can participate in wheelchair basketball at a variety of levels, from grass-roots social games, junior competitions, right through to international competitions.

Basketball Queensland (BQ) member association Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association is the peak body for sport, recreation and fitness for people with a physical disability or vision impairment in Queensland, and administrates a number of wheelchair basketball activities and programs across Queensland. Read more about wheelchair basketball through Sporting Wheelies.

The National Wheelchair Basketball League and Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League are the country’s premier wheelchair basketball competitions, with games held around Australia throughout the year.

Australia has two main national wheelchair basketball teams: the Rollers men’s team and Gliders women’s team, both of which have gained international acclaim in recent years. Visit the Basketball Australia website for more information.

Pathways exist for athletes wishing to take their wheelchair basketball career further, with Queensland-based national level athletes eligible for the Basketball Queensland National Performance Program.
